Chapter 08 - Farewells

3-25-6050

Welcome Home

Our small group of Nightwings and Friends (Tasher, Cricket, Taelvis, Emmet, Bat, and Kellas) loads all of the ill-gotten valuables into the boat, and employs two prisoners of the Medusa gang to row the boat. On the way down the river is encountered two boats with crossbowman, evidently members of Medusa. Bat makes a poor attempt at looking like he’s supposed to belong here with his rag-tag bloody group of strangers with two Medusa members rowing. The boat orders the Nightwings to halt, while one of the prisoners screams Nightwings, and jumps out of the boat. Kellas shoots him in the arm with an arrow. Tasher knifes the other prisoner and takes his place at the oars. Bolts fly and hit Talvis and Kellas. Bat flew to one of the boat and stabbed a guy from behind, killing him. Taelvis casts a spell and a dirt wall appears on one of the boats, sinking it. Tasher rows on. Bat lands on the other boat and kicks a guy off the boat.

The group passes the guards and proceeds to Sel-Kai while Bat flies ahead to house Tharal. The Nightwings are intercepted by a customs boat that tells them to proceed to the Sighing Docks. Tasher, pretending to be cooperative, acknowledges them but tries to go through Black Oaks District (the location of House Tharal). The guards, forcefully, tell them to go through the Great Canal to the Sighing Docks. Tasher goes through the Killian Way, at which point a boat of three Redcoats (3) escorts them along to the Sighing Docks where they are interrogated. Tasher says they are going to house Tharal. Eventually a mousy looking customs official comes by and thoroughly looks through the boat at all the fantastic booty. Kellas bribes the guy with 479 gold and they proceed to House Tharal.

The Underground

Dag greets the Tasher and the boat at the House’s basement dock and has the guards take everyone up. While Tasher, Cricket, Taelvis and Emmet were saving Bat and cleaning out the Medusa stronghold, Dag, Raen and Jerig came up with a new plan. It was too dangerous to stay in Sel-kai and Dag and Jerig got direction from Agonar to travel to Xooba to investigate the slave trade. Raen, also having an interest in finding his brother who was victim of the slave trade decides to go with them. Agonar has introduced them to the tracker B’tard who has contacts with the Blue Gulls and will be guiding them.

Bat informs the Nightwings he owed Kellas his life and would be helping him on an excursion into the Silaar countryside then getting him back to Reandor. He asks Tasher and the Ingman (the captive Healer from the Medusa stronghold) to go with them. Kellas was investigating a small triangular box and have an an appointment with Yhani Rohmian and the College of Valris to analyze it.

Cricket heads out into the streets to try and locate other Nightwings, but to no avail. Word gets to him that the Nightwings have essentially disbanded and scattered. Between Medusa, the Red Dragons, and the Golden Hand the Nightwings were in a dangerous predicament. While the rest of the Nightwings are heading out of Sel-kai Cricket and Moth decide to stay to try and revive the Nightwings in some manner.

Preparations

On the next day, Raen goes shopping and heals everyone and gets some healing herbs.

Talvis, Kellas and folks go to the College of Valris because Kellas wants information on his triangular box. They borrow one of House Theral’s skiffs, load the cargo in and head over to the college of Valris. Yhanni is a female L’Nar elf. Kellas talks with Yanni and they examine the triangular box they have. The box is 6” to a side, 3” tall, in the top compartment, there is a parchment folded up, and it is a crude map of Silaar. Yhanni examines the box and contents and gives the following information:

The writing in the upper right is a more common Thanorian alphabet from the 2nd error: “they sleep w/in the temple of the three”. She says that the 3 (in the early city state period of Thanor (8 thousand years ago), aka the paukapira were openly worshiped with a less cohesive pantheon, and these gods even competed within each other. A few of the Priest-kings started conquering and consolidated their powers. Some continued to be worshiped, others moved underground. Temples were constructed in remote locations where followers could go (as might be on this map). The box also has a pouch with some dried herb in it. The other compartment has a golden triangular amulet which has hieroglyphs of the 3. Kellas is the youngest prince, and spends a lot of time exploring. After a few minutes, someone comes into the room. Kellas introduces him as Regin, his companion, tutor, and advisor.
Taelvis and Emmett, having a great academic interest in the old countryside of Silaar (where the old Thanor kingdom was) decide to accompany Bat as well.

Yhanni appraises the following items.

Each person of the group gets 365 gold, and everyone distributes 100 gp to the healer to buy lots of herbs.

Kellas speaks up and says, it will take a week of steady riding to get to the central plains. It’s pretty safe ride, but we’ll want to stay off the main road. The group takes the ferry from Sel-kai to the tip of the Kai’sa Peninsula. For a week they travel south, over 200 miles to the last town under the control of the Prince before the Thanor Wastes: Sel-Town.

The Waste, The Swamp, and The Medusa

The group restocks in Sel-town and goes to the Red Lemming inn. They take dinner in the tavern and get a good night sleep.

In the morning they get up and have some breakfast in the Inn. The barkeep makes small talk then says “I am Medusa!”. A scimitar appears in his hand and there is a large thunderclap that deafens most of the party. The two serving girls turn out to appear as spell casters. A water bolt progresses towards Kellas from one of the women, hits him in the arm – he stumbles into the table. The bartender attacks Regin, who turns the blade. In the ensuing battle, the man with a scimitar gets felled and turns out to be a woman. The other two chicks are felled by Kellas and Taelvis, and they turned out to be men.

They heal up with the help of Ingman and move along, quickly.
The party is traveling along the Thanor wasteland, and an essence storm comes up and affects the party, who dive for cover. Regin falls off his horse and is knocked unconscious. They camp for the evening, wake up and continue down the road.

About half of the day later, they see some horses – 2 guys in the road and three along the sides. They are of large stature like Laan but with the prominent features and dark skin like the Jaaderi. They have swords and some have bows; not a lot of baggage on the horses. The guys part, and let the party ride through. In conversation, the road guys mention that the west trail contain monsters and giants.

The party camps out at a bend in the road. In the morning, they will go off the main road towards the west. In the morning, the party heads west trying to find an old road. The party spreads out a bit (20’ apart) and head west. One of the party finds an old flagstone road, and the group reforms and heads west. After a few days, the lands starts turning to marsh lands. A day is spent tromping through the swamp without seeing the river. The worst thing is the giant flies (6” long) always all over. One of the horses gets killed by these mosquitos and the leeches plague the party. The party gets to the Laernan river, and as night falls, the team builds a raft. They encounter dead ghosties in the marshes. Tasher, Taelvis and the Kellas build a raft and cross the river and make their way through the marshes. Bat goes on recon and returns with a path through most of the marsh.

After the marsh, The gang awakes in the middle of the night to an attacked by 10 black wolves with glowing red eyes. The gang beats back the attack, but barely. If it were not for Ingman they surely would have died. Afterwards Ingman is a bloody broken mess.
